Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting is the technique people reach for when an LLM keeps “skipping steps.” You ask for a calculation, a plan, or a tricky decision—and the output feels like it teleported to the conclusion.
So you try the classic: “think step by step.”
It often helps. But there’s a catch: you don’t actually need the model’s private internal reasoning to get better results—and in many production settings, you shouldn’t ask for it.

Skip CoT when:
- you just need a quick rewrite
- the task is purely creative
- the answer must be grounded in data you haven’t provided (CoT won’t fix missing inputs)
